Dynamical Downscaling of ERA5 Data on the North-Western Mediterranean Sea: From Atmosphere to High-Resolution Coastal Wave Climate

نویسندگان

چکیده

A 29-year wind/wave hindcast is produced over the Mediterranean Sea for period 1990–2018. The dataset obtained by downscaling ERA5 global atmospheric reanalyses, which provide initial and boundary conditions a numerical chain based on limited-area weather wave models: BOLAM, MOLOCH WaveWatch III (WW3) models. In WW3 computational domain, an unstructured mesh used. variable resolutions reach up to 500 m along coasts of Ligurian Tyrrhenian seas (Italy), main objects study. validated using observations from coastal stations buoys. wind validation provides velocity correlations between 0.45 0.76, while significant height are much higher—between 0.89 0.96. results also compared original low-resolution dataset, assimilated comparison shows that improves reliability, particularly in regions, especially with regard directions.

Seasonal to yearly assessment of temperature and precipitation trends in the North Western Mediterranean Basin by dynamical downscaling of climate scenarios at high resolution (1971–2050)

The complex topography and high climatic variability of the North Western Mediterranean Basin (NWMB) require a detailed assessment of climate change projections at high resolution. ECHAM5/MPIOM global climate projections for mid-21st century and three different emission scenarios are downscaled at 10 km resolution over the NWMB, using the WRF-ARW regional model. High resolution improves the spa...

North Atlantic climate control on plankton variability in the Balearic Sea, western Mediterranean

[1] We assessed interrelations between climatic, meteorological and hydrological factors in the Balearic Sea, and identified drivers of the abundance variability of planktonic copepods over the period 1994–2003. Temporal variability in the total abundance of copepods appears to be indicative of the southern spreading of the Northern Current, and therefore of meridional transport of water masses...

Floating debris in the Ligurian Sea, north-western Mediterranean.

Results from visual sightings of large floating debris are presented, taken in the Ligurian Sea, a sub-basin of the north-western Mediterranean Sea which belongs to the recently stated "Cetacean Sanctuary". Data have been collected during three oceanographic cruises, during the summer of 1997 and 2000. Results for the 1997 data suggest a debris density of the order of 15-25 objects km(-2), whil...

Neustonic microplastic and zooplankton in the North Western Mediterranean Sea.

Neustonic microplastic and zooplankton abundance was determined in the North Western Mediterranean Sea during a summer cruise between July 9th and August 6th 2010, with a break between July 22 th and 25th due to a strong wind event. Ninety percent of the 40 stations contained microplastic particles (size 0.3-5mm) of various compositions: e.g., filaments, polystyrene, thin plastic films. An aver...

Relevance of ERA40 dynamical downscaling for modeling deep convection in the Mediterranean Sea

A strong open-ocean convection event was observed in the Northwestern Mediterranean sea during the 1986-87 winter. This period was used as a case study to evaluate the impact of the spatial resolution of atmospheric forcing on deep convection modeling. Twin numerical experiments were performed with an oceanic model forced by atmospheric forcing sets with different resolutions. A low resolution ...
